She Drowned in Moonlight, Strangled by Her Own Bra

The Princess stood at the edge of the lake, watching the rain fall from the sky.

It was a refreshing rain. The kind that reminded her of hot summer days spent under a lawn sprinkler in her youth, before all this Princess nonsense had consumed her.

She smiled as memories of those simpler times came back to her. She hadn’t thought of those days in a long time – hadn’t even been able to most days. Her mind wasn’t what it once was, you know.

But now, she recalled her childhood as easily as yesterday, and it was wonderful.

She saw her young self sitting in the grass, her baby brother beside her. The youthful her looked over her shoulder to see her mother sunbathing behind her.

Not exactly sure why, the Princess couldn’t help but do the same.

She looked behind her, then froze.

A moment later, she smiled and held out her hand.

Her mother took it, then folded the Princess into an embrace.

And then they were swaying gently back and forth to a music only they heard. Their eyes were closed, and they held each other closely.

For a long while, neither of them spoke.

Then, slowly, the mother lifted her head and opened her eyes.

She waited until her daughter returned her gaze, then spoke more clearly than she had in years.

“Carrie, this is lovely and all, but really, why is the rain purple?”

The Princess laughed.

“Oh. Don’t worry. You’ll meet him soon enough,” she said.

And with that, mother and daughter linked arms and walked off into the moonlight.

Behind them, millions of voices whispered, “We love you.”

They both smiled, but it was the Princess who answered.

She smirked at her mother, received a nod of permission, then whispered back.

“We know.”
