Some say that I lack empathy.

This is patently untrue.

For example, I think it must be dreadful to be a red blood cell.

Can you imagine?

Day in and day out, always pulsing in the same way.

Stuck in an endless loop.

What a tedious life!

I can relate to that, for such is the case with my entire being.

Seriously, you people are so uninteresting.

Even my experiments, my only weapons against your banality, usually fail me.

I can only prove myself right so many times before it grows tiresome.

Yet I cannot stop.

Experimentation is as much a part of me as my constantly-circling blood.

I cannot live without either, and offered the choice, I'd give up my blood first.

So I once again form a hypothesis.

I test it by introducing John to Sebastian as my “friend.”

He corrects me with a murmured “colleague,” and while of course no one notices, this unexpected result surprises me.

I talk trivia with Sebastian, but most of my attention is focused on John.

For like blood leaving the body and thus finally ending its monotony, he has piqued my interest.

I called him a friend, but that’s not right.

No, he’s a variable.

Oh, I do so like this John Watson most days.

For variables, you see, are rarely boring.
