New Fic: Cliche

Cliché
Fandom: Farscape
Rated: PG
Category: Drabble, John POV. John/Aeryn friendship or much more. Take it as you will.
Season: Early Two.
Spoilers: None per se, though I had a line from “Picture If You Will” in mind when I wrote this.
Summary: Just because something’s cliché doesn’t make it untrue.
Note: Merry Christmas to taj_mahal07  and bluesolis42 , who reminded me that I never watched Farscape. My bad. Also? Thank you both for your friendship and the endless amusement you bring to my days.

---

There are no days on a starship.

Sure, Moya cycles the lights so it sorta seems like there’s days, but there’s not.

Not really.

And without days, there’s no weeks, months, or years.

It’s easy to lose track of time.

Still, I know it’s Christmas on Earth.

Don’t ask me why, but I keep up with such things.

Of course, no one here knows to ask me what I want.

That frustrates me. Not because that’s their fault, but because for once I can actually answer.

It’s cliché, but it’s true.

I only want one thing to open up.

Aeryn.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! As for Farscape, well...

I am almost done with season two, and I like it. I'm not sure love it, and I don't obsess over it, but I like it. I can feel myself liking it a bit more sometimes, like I almost could fall for it, but it's not OMG I MUST WATCH EVERY MINUTE OF THIS RIGHT NOW show, like Firefly. I'm not head over heels. (yet?)

I quite like some aspects of it (the snark! the fact that it's not afraid to be utterly ridiculous!) but I'm not insane for it. Frankly, though, I think that has less to do with Farscape than it does with my television viewing habits these days. It is very difficult for TV to satisfy me, even if it is as well-done as Farscape (and it is well-done).

I am so used to writing and interacting with my characters or with real people via the internet that simply watching characters doesn't really rev my engine most days. It's hard for me to get into TV for that reason.

I want to interact, not just observe. I want to create, not just consume.

So...I get bored within minutes watching television, no matter what's on. It takes something truly special to reel me in. There's too many other things to do to sit there and do nothing.

So, I tend to watch Farscape in bits and pieces. I watch ten minutes, then play on twitter for ten minutes. I watch a bit more, then play on LJ. That has kept me able to watch. Doing nothing for a whole show? Not gonna happen - no matter what it is.

Unless it's The Way We Weren't, which is a truly exceptional episode of television and required an immediate second viewing. Also in the category of truly outstanding are: Out of Their Minds for wonderful fun and brutal honesty, The Maltese Crichton for bringing a character point of John's sharply into stark relief, and Won't Get Fooled Again for sheer fucked-upedness, and The Locket for sheer poignancy.

So, ahem, I do like it. And I feel a soft, warm flame of Farscape fondness licking at my soul that might lead to an all-consuming fire but most likely will just keep that area warm and periodically flare up. The all-consuming fire type of love typically happens to me much faster than this, so instead I predict a long friendship. And like I said, I think my days of going ga-ga over TV are largely over, just because TV doesn't cut it for me most days. Combine that with the fact that it has to compete with the things that already own my soul (Firefly and Stargate), and it's a hard sell for outright consuming love. And that's okay.

Everyone needs more friends.

Especially if they are such strong characters as those on Farscape. As I said on Twitter with nothing but affection: silly, wonderful FUBARed Farscape.

But you know, some people marry their friends.

Just sayin.

I understand what you mean but I've teetered over into the love love category. Teetered? Fell head over heels is more like it. (but not as strong as Firefly this love is different. much like a love for a weird drugged out, over-sexed friend)

When I first started watching I was very surprised at how...different the show was. Even the puppets work for me. I think that was my biggest barrier but I quickly stopped viewing Rygel and Pilot as anything other than richly drawn characters.

I think I fell hard for the show after Won't Get Fooled Again. Total WTF moment. I loved it!! As I watched I couldn't believe how beautifully messed up it was. Wait, maybe I fell for the show when Crichton was about to be bronzed and instead of having a manly, dignified pose, he's all bent up with that look on his face. Wait...I could go on but suffice it to say this show has grabbed me and now I know what all the fuss is about.

As soon as I finished the PK Wars mini-series I immediately popped in the Premier ep. A rewatch was mandantory as I still can't believe how well threads from earlier seasons are picked up later.

Other things I'm very impressed about: Continuity, continuity, continuity. Nothing happens in a vaccuum here. Consequences all around. Big story arcs, little story arcs, passion, sexyness (this show has some very adult sensibilities and I love that), sensuality, emotion (I've cried. More than once). Nothing is easy - the writers don't give the characters easy ways out. And I like these characters very much. But we'll discuss that after you've seen all the eps.

All in all - here's what I have to say about Farscape: Whoah! What a ride!!

Agreed and agreed and we'll talk later.

As for you, go get the comics and support the hopefully upcoming webisodes! I'll be along shortly!

PS-I will say this, too, though. I often finish an ep of Farscape and say "huh." In a good way. It makes me react, and that is pretty rare. It's a good show.

Yes, yes with the "huh". A few times I just have to take a moment and try to process what I've just seen. This is a good thing!

Yes, it is. It's a thoughtful "huh" or a "did they just do that?"

It is a very good thing.
