New Fic: The Warden

The Warden
Author: jackwabbit
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rated: PG (super mild language)
Category: Gen, Ficlet, Carson/Rodney Friendship.
Season: Post-Sunday, Pre-Kindred.
Spoilers: The Return, Part I.
Summary: Sometimes we do the oddest things for our friends.
Note: This one is in thanks to Paul McGillion for doing his latest Q&A on Darth Mallozzi’s blog.

Four Marines lifted a heavy box from a wheeled cart for its trip up the stairs of Atlantis.

“Hey!” shouted Rodney McKay. “Be careful with that! It’s highly specialized equipment!”

One of the Marines answered while the other three rolled their eyes.

“Sure thing, Dr. McKay. We’ll get it up to your lab no problem.”

“Actually, that needs to go to my quarters,” said Rodney, as the Marines started off with their package.

“You know that’s farther away, right?” said the head Marine.

“Yes,” answered Rodney, clearly annoyed with the statement of the obvious.

“And you know this is too big for the transporters, right?”

“Yes, well… it’s important, so uh, just put it in my quarters, alright?”

Suddenly, John Sheppard’s voice interrupted the conversation. “Rodney, are you antagonizing my Marines again?”

The group stopped and all eyes turned to John.

“Antagonizing? Me? No. I just need this delivered to my quarters is all,” explained Rodney.

“Setting up shop there too, are you?” teased Sheppard.

“Something like that.”

“Rodney, I can’t have you working all night. You know how you get when you don’t sleep.”

“I work all night now.”

“Good point. But at least if you’re not in your lab, I can pretend you’re not working.”

“You could, but that would be delusional.”

Sheppard sighed and waved to the Marines, who were growing impatient with all this banter. “Fine. Do as he says.”

“Yes, sir,” snapped the lead Marine, and the quartet started off again, grateful to be moving.

Rodney followed the Marines all the way to his quarters and supervised the placement of his latest equipment personally.

“You want us to unpack it for you, too, Doc?” asked one Marine, after Rodney insisted on yet another repositioning of the package. His sarcasm was lost on McKay.

“Uh, no. No. I think that will do nicely. You can go.”

All four Marines were out the door before Rodney could change his mind again.

As the door slid shut behind them, Rodney turned to look at their recent burden. He stared at the huge box the Marines had placed in one corner of his quarters and grinned maniacally.

Many hours of complete obsession later, Rodney McKay introduced the only red-eared sliders in the Pegasus Galaxy to their new home.

The little bastards had been smuggled through the Stargate when they were still too small for anyone to notice, but they weren’t tiny now.

Now, they roamed their monstrous enclosure with impunity and swam as fast as lighting.

Rodney was certainly no reptile lover, but he had to admit that watching the little guys was entertaining. Most of the time, he hardly minded how messy they were or how much they ate, and their antics made giving up twenty-five square feet of his quarters to the nicest aquatic terrarium money could buy not too much of a hardship.

After all, when it came to Carson Beckett’s no longer wee baby turtles, no expense was too great.

My friend Jeana pointed out the turtle aquarium in one of the S4 episodes, but I never really much thought about it afterward. Very sweet little ficlet. :-)

*snickers* Darth Mallozzi...

Aw right back. Glad you liked it. Oddly, I have not noticed said aquarium. If I have, I have forgotten. Must confess to not watching season four too closely, minus Kindred II, of course. And Miller's Crossing.

As for Darth Mallozzi, I'm not sure where I picked that up, but I quite like it, so I totally stole it. ; )

There is a specific comment in said blog that inspired this fic, however. Since you are first responder, you can get the author's note that I debated putting in but held off on.

Here ya go:
Bailey writes: Whatever happened to the “wee turtles?”
PM: Rodney still has them. The bastard! “Give me back my wee baby turtles!!”

Aha. I must confess I wondered precisely what the inspiration was. ;-)

I think it might be Miller's Crossing, actually, but I couldn't swear on it. It's a really brief moment. The camera actually starts on the aquarium and pans away, and you don't have but have a heartbeat to register what you're looking at. I think Jeana probably only noticed because she was working on a vid and was trolling for clips. You notice more when you watch episodes with a vidder's eye.

Tis true, tis true. About my motivation and those pesky vidders.

Of course, now that I think about it, I spent most of season four analying the pics behind Sam's desk. I love how they kept changing them!

I shall have to rewatch Miller's Crossing again. Oh, woe is me.

Random: I saw something in Serenity the other day that I'd never seen before when it was on at the gym. I made a note to double check it, but by the time I got home I couldn't remember what it was! Ah! Senile already!
