“I can’t believe he got in another fight!” complained Simon as Zoë dragged him toward the infirmary.

“Well, you know the captain,” answered Zoë.

“Yes, I’m sorry to say that I do,” said Simon as he rubbed sleep from his eyes.  “And I suspect this has less to do with barroom disagreements and more to do with a stop at a certain training house. ”

Zoë paused for a moment. “I wouldn’t go mentionin that to him if I were you.”

Simon snorted a laugh.  “I’m not that much of an idiot.”

“Good,” answered Zoë.  “Now go patch him up, and dope him good.  I don’t wanna listen to him moan any more and he’s got at least one knife wound needs stitchin.”

Zoë shoved Simon through the infirmary doors and followed him inside.

Simon sighed as he saw Mal sitting on the single bed there.  His eye was blacked, his lip was bloodied, and he looked like it hurt to breathe.  As Simon approached him, Mal grimaced.

“Sorry to get you outta your warm bunk, there, Doc.”

Simon sighed again as he pushed Mal down on the bed and lifted his shirt to reveal a fresh laceration.  Zoë gently took Mal’s bloody hand away from the cut, then Simon’s expert fingers carefully probed the wound.

“Just doing my duty, right?” mumbled Simon.  “Now tell me where it hurts.”

Simon prepared a pain-relieving injection as Mal answered with a single hoarse word.

“Everywhere.”

Simon glanced at Zoë.  The doctor hesitated only a second before delivering his relief, but the first mate didn’t waver for a instant.

The last thing Malcolm Reynolds knew before he drifted into oblivion was the warm clench of fingers around his hand signaling that Zoë understood what he meant.

Not that she’d ever tell a soul.
