For Everyone Doing NaNo

Well, you're just over half way through November now. You should be at, oh, 26,672 words by tonight.

I hope you're plugging along well, but just in case you need something with which to procrastinate, I present this lovely vid. I found it a few weeks ago, and though I'm not doing NaNoWriMo this year, I absolutely love it. So true, so funny, and so well-done. Enjoy!

Good for you for breaking last year's mark!

Now, what about a flashback? Can a character have an inner monologue moment of reflection? Helpful at all?

I'm not a believer in "throw in ninjas" or whatever just to get your word count for NaNo, but I am a believer in "you just have to power through it." We've all been there, we'll all be there again. But I honestly and truly believe the best cure for writer's block is to write. Sounds trite, I know, but I find it true. Many texts on writing advise the same thing. You must just write, write, write.

So, about that flashback...

Or do you have a scene later in the story in mind? Can you write that and then bridge the gap? I do that a lot with longer works. I hate, hate, hate writing action, so I skip it and go to a character scene or conversation, and then go back and make the earlier part of the story meet it.

Just write something. It doesn't have to go in order (and I personally find going in order pretty damn boring sometimes). It doesn't have to be perfect.

You know that I wrote the entirety of Command Decisions just because I had one scene from chapter seventeen in my head, right? You know I wrote that chapter first, right? Anyway...it helps me to write the parts that I want to write first if I get stuck. Maybe it can help you.

Good luck!
